The South Also Exists: A Rioplatense Journey Through Culture, Music, and Landscape
(Intermediate level or placement exam)

    Guided by a passionate Uruguayan teacher, participants in this course will embark on a journey through the most iconic elements of Rioplatense culture. From the ritual of drinking mate and the national passion for football, to the vibrant sounds of fusion music with drums, tango, and rock, we will also explore the landscapes, cuisine, and cities full of history and charm. This course offers many opportunities to practice Spanish conversation: we will talk about personal tastes in traditional food and drinks, musical preferences for listening and dancing, and discover new cultural traditions and interests. Students will also exchange opinions about sports, plan social and recreational activities, and travel symbolically from coast to coast, guided by an expert on Uruguay.

Exploring the Ethnic Diversity of Modern Mexico
(Advanced level or placement exam)

    The course aims offering an overview of the indigenous cultures that live in Mexico today. The objective is for students to become familiar with Mexico's ethnic diversity and its most representative characteristics. The course will take a historical, social, and cultural approach. The course includes an introduction to the general historical background, an in-depth look at the ethnic families in Mexico (their geographic distribution, language, and number of speakers), their characteristics (festivals, music, religion, cuisine, and social and political organization), and their indigenous identity (attitudes toward their own ethnic groups). During the sessions, active participation from students is expected, allowing them to assimilate and gain an intercultural perspective on each of the topics.

Throughout the course, you will explore the historical context in which this cultural phenomenon emerged and learn about the voices that transformed the musical landscape in countries such as Chile, Argentina, Mexico, and Cuba—understanding why their legacy remains alive today. Each session includes a musical appreciation segment with live examples performed by the instructor and guest Latin American musicians. An immersive experience designed to listen, analyze, and truly feel this music from within.
